Anthropology In World-Building

What Is Anthropology?

It is the academic field dedicated to studying the dynamics of peoples around the world, either in one’s own country or abroad. Of course, anthropology is itself an interdisciplinary field, since it also takes into account archaeology and history. However, what separates anthropology from those fields is the focus on people who are relevant to the present. This field takes into account ritual, religion, and kinships.

How Is It Relevant To World-Building?

The field of anthropology is incredibly important for world-building if you want to develop an intricate complexity to any tribe, nation, or kingdom.

Steven Erikson, the author of the Malazan Book of the Fallan series, was himself an anthropology major. So, anthropology is an incredibly important field if you wish to develop the people living in your mythocosmography.
